Next-to-MHV Yang-Mills kinematic algebra
Kinematic numerators of Yang-Mills scattering amplitudes possess a rich Lie
algebraic structure that suggest the existence of a hidden infinite-dimensional
kinematic algebra. Explicitly realizing such a kinematic algebra is a
longstanding open problem that only has had partial success for simple helicity
sectors. In past work, we introduced a framework using tensor currents and
fusion rules to generate BCJ numerators of a special subsector of NMHV
amplitudes in Yang-Mills theory. Here we enlarge the scope and explicitly
realize a kinematic algebra for all NMHV amplitudes. Master numerators are
obtained directly from the algebraic rules and through commutators and
kinematic Jacobi identities other numerators can be generated. Inspecting the
output of the algebra, we conjecture a closed-form expression for the master
BCJ numerator up to any multiplicity. We also introduce a new method, based on
group algebra of the permutation group, to solve for the generalized gauge
freedom of BCJ numerators. It uses the recently introduced binary BCJ relations
to provide a complete set of NMHV kinematic numerators that consist of pure

On the kinematic algebra for BCJ numerators beyond the MHV sector
The duality between color and kinematics present in scattering amplitudes of Yang-Mills theory strongly suggests the existence of a hidden kinematic Lie algebra that controls the gauge theory. While associated BCJ numerators are known on closed forms to any multiplicity at tree level, the kinematic algebra has only been partially explored for the simplest of four-dimensional amplitudes: up to the MHV sector. In this paper we introduce a framework that allows us to characterize the algebra beyond the MHV sector. This allows us to both constrain some of the ambiguities of the kinematic algebra, and better control the generalized gauge freedom that is associated with the BCJ numerators. Specifically, in this paper, we work in dimension-agnostic notation and determine the kinematic algebra valid up to certain ? ((epsilon i .epsilon j )(2)) terms that in four dimensions compute the next-to-MHV sector involving two scalars. The kinematic algebra in this sector is simple, given that we introduce tensor currents that generalize standard Yang-Mills vector currents. These tensor currents control the generalized gauge freedom, allowing us to generate multiple different versions of BCJ numerators from the same kinematic algebra. A cohort study: temporal trends in prevalence of antecedents, comorbidities and mortality in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians with first heart failure hospitalization, 2000-2009
Abstract Background/objectives: Little is known about trends in risk factors and mortality for Aboriginal Australians with heart failure (HF). This population-based study evaluated trends in prevalence of risk factors, 30-day and 1-year all-cause mortality following first HF hospitalization among Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Western Australians in the decade 2000-2009. Methods: Linked-health data were used to identify patients (20-84 years), with a first-ever HF hospitalization. Trends in demographics, comorbidities, interventions and risk factors were evaluated. Logistic and Cox regression models were fitted to test and compare trends over time in 30-day and 1-year mortality. Results: Of 17,379 HF patients, 1,013 (5.8 %) were Aboriginal. Compared with 2000-2002, the prevalence (as history) of myocardial infarction and hypertension increased more markedly in 2006-2009 in Aboriginal (versus non-Aboriginal) patients, while diabetes and chronic kidney disease remained disproportionately higher in Aboriginal patients. Risk factor trends, including the Charlson comorbidity index, increased over time in younger Aboriginal patients. Risk-adjusted 30-day mortality did not change over the decade in either group. Risk-adjusted 1-year mortality (in 30-day survivors) was non-significantly higher in Aboriginal patients in 2006-2008 compared with 2000-2002 (hazard ratio (HR) 1.44; 95 % CI 0.85-2.41; p-trend = 0.47) whereas it decreased in non-Aboriginal patients (HR 0.87; 95 % CI 0.78-0.97; p-trend = 0.01). Conclusions: Between 2000 and 2009, the prevalence of HF antecedents increased and remained disproportionately higher in Aboriginal (versus non-Aboriginal) HF patients. Risk-adjusted 1-year mortality did not improve in Aboriginal patients over the period in contrast with non-Aboriginal patients. These findings highlight the need for better prevention and post-HF care in Aboriginal Australians
Density dependence of spin relaxation in GaAs quantum well at room temperature
Carrier density dependence of electron spin relaxation in an intrinsic GaAs
quantum well is investigated at room temperature using time-resolved circularly
polarized pump-probe spectroscopy. It is revealed that the spin relaxation time
first increases with density in the relatively low density regime where the
linear D'yakonov-Perel' spin-orbit coupling terms are dominant, and then tends
to decrease when the density is large and the cubic D'yakonov-Perel' spin-orbit
coupling terms become important. These features are in good agreement with
theoritical predictions by L\"u {\em et al.} [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 73}, 125314
(2006)]. A fully microscopic calculation based on numerically solving the
kinetic spin Bloch equations with both the D'yakonov-Perel' and the
Bir-Aronov-Pikus mechanisms included, reproduces the density dependence of spin

Exploring the Dust Content of Galactic Winds with Herschel. I. NGC 4631
We present a detailed analysis of deep far-infrared observations of the
nearby edge-on star-forming galaxy NGC 4631 obtained with the Herschel Space
Observatory. Our PACS images at 70 and 160 um show a rich complex of filaments
and chimney-like features that extends up to a projected distance of 6 kpc
above the plane of the galaxy. The PACS features often match extraplanar
Halpha, radio-continuum, and soft X-ray features observed in this galaxy,
pointing to a tight disk-halo connection regulated by star formation. On the
other hand, the morphology of the colder dust component detected on larger
scale in the SPIRE 250, 350, and 500 um data matches the extraplanar H~I
streams previously reported in NGC 4631 and suggests a tidal origin. The PACS
70/160 ratios are elevated in the central ~3.0 kpc region above the nucleus of
this galaxy (the "superbubble"). A pixel-by-pixel analysis shows that dust in
this region has a higher temperature and/or an emissivity with a steeper
spectral index (beta > 2) than the dust in the disk, possibly the result of the
harsher environment in the superbubble. Star formation in the disk seems
energetically insufficient to lift the material out of the disk, unless it was
more active in the past or the dust-to-gas ratio in the superbubble region is
higher than the Galactic value. Some of the dust in the halo may also have been
tidally stripped from nearby companions or lifted from the disk by galaxy

Comparative bactericidal activities of daptomycin, glycopeptides, linezolid and tigecycline against blood isolates of Gram-positive bacteria in Taiwan
ABSTRACTIn-vitro MICs and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) of daptomycin, linezolid, tigecycline, vancomycin and teicoplanin against Gram-positive bacteria were determined using the broth microdilution method for ten blood isolates each of methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA), methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), including two vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus (VISA), vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis. One strain of VISA was tested in a time-kill synergism assay of daptomycin combined with oxacillin, imipenem, rifampicin and isepamicin. Daptomycin showed excellent in-vitro bactericidal activity against all the isolates tested, with no tolerance or synergism effects when combined with other agents, except with rifampicin against VISA. Vancomycin had better bactericidal activity against MRSA and MSSA than did teicoplanin. Linezolid had the poorest bactericidal activity against the isolates tested, with 100% tolerance by the MSSA and VRE isolates, and 80% tolerance by the MRSA isolates. Tolerance towards tigecycline was exhibited by 40% of the MRSA isolates, 100% of the MSSA and vancomycin-resistant E. faecalis isolates, and 90% of the vancomycin-resistant E. faecium isolates
An objective method for the assessment of fluid injection-induced seismicity and application to tectonically active regions in central California
Changes in seismicity rates, whether of tectonic or of induced origin, can readily be identified in regions where background rates are low but are difficult to detect in seismically active regions. We present a novel method to identify likely induced seismicity in tectonically active regions based on short-range spatiotemporal correlations between changes in fluid injection and seismicity rates. The method searches through the entire parameter space of injection rate thresholds and determines the statistical significance of correlated changes in injection and seismicity rates. Applying our method to Kern County, central California, we find that most earthquakes within the region are tectonic; however, fluid injection contributes to seismicity in four different cases. Three of these are connected to earthquake sequences with events above M4. Each of these sequences followed an abrupt increase in monthly injection rates of at least 15,000 m^3. The probability that the seismicity sequences and the abrupt changes in injection rates in Kern County coincide by chance is only 4%. The identified earthquake sequences display low Gutenberg-Richter b values of ∼0.6–0.7 and at times systematic migration patterns characteristic for a diffusive process. Our results show that injection-induced pressure perturbations can influence seismic activity at distances of 10 km or more. Triggering of earthquakes at these large distances may be facilitated by complex local geology and faults in tectonically active regions.
